My Grampy wanted to join the Merchant Marine. Instead, he was sent to "signalman's school", where he learned to send and receive messages along sight lines. After 12 weeks of basic training and six months of signalman's school, he was shipped to the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. Thirteen days later, the war ended. He never saw combat.
Grampy always had perfect timing.
